Archaic Greek Art: Outdoor Statuary

94_800_8804__40802.jpg Up right up until the Archaic Greeks created the very first freestanding sculpture, a noteworthy triumph, carvings had primarily been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. For the most part the statues, or kouros figures, were of adolescent and nice-looking male or female (kore) Greeks. The kouroi were believed by the Greeks to typify beauty and were sculpted with one foot leading and an uncompromising stiffness to their forward-facing poses; the male statues were always strapping, sinewy, and nude. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. The Archaic period was an awesome point of change for the Greeks as they expanded into new modes of government, formed novel expressions of art, and attained insights of the men and women and cultures outside of Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization went on to progress, unabated.

Cultural Sculpture in Old Greece

A good number of sculptors were paid by the temples to enhance the elaborate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods until the time period came to a close and countless Greeks started to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred, when it became more common for sculptors to portray everyday men and women as well. Affluent families would sometimes commission a rendering of their forefathers for their large familial burial tombs; portraiture also became common and would be appropriated by the Romans upon their acquisition of Greek civilization. It is amiss to state that the arts had one aim throughout The Classical Greek period, a time period of innovative achievement during which the usage of sculpture and various other art forms evolved. Whether to fulfill a visual craving or to commemorate the figures of religion, Greek sculpture was actually an artistic method in the ancient world, which could be what attracts our attention currently.

A True Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Amazing finds of both Christian and pagan roots have been made by archaeologists and restorers in the area around Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The nearby basilica is largely famous for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its portico. The location of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was not in a well-known area and was, therefore, not often visited. The part of town where it was situated was forlorn and uninviting which was enough to keep people away. It was a this time that Pope Clement XI commissioned the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a water fountain to modernize the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. August 11, 1717 marked the date when work on the church’s infrastructure started. Medals bearing the imagery of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown in the foundation following the consecration of the first stone.

A few moments of care every day is all that is needed to maintain an herb garden once it's planted, and planter gardens and potted herbs can be brought indoors once the fall nights begin to change, making it continue all year long. The Legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, were essentially gardens selected and planted on roof terraces. They were waterproof and designed to be developed over a large, curved stone substructure that held massive storage rooms further down. Water was brought up to the terraces by hydraulic systems and the terrace soil was profound enough to grow trees. The plants that were selected were thyme, poppy, anise, and rosemary.

Enrich Your Everyday Life with a Fountain

The movement and sound of water generated from a fountain have two health benefits: cleaning the air and proving a place of relaxation and peace, both of which will improve your quality of life.

Both an indoor and an outdoor garden fountain will reward you in ways you might not even grasp. People around the world are compelled to go to coastal cities and major bodies of water, most likely driven by the fact that our bodies have a high water content. All living beings need water to exist, and while you could move to an expensive house on the beach somewhere, a much easier and cheaper option is to install a water feature wherever you live.

Your patio, porch, or back yard can be improved by installing an outdoor garden fountain. Outdoor water features can further improve even the most beautiful space. It could be a lovely addition to the wall of your enclosed porch or outdoors above the veranda. Add charm and the lovely sound of flowing water to your flower bed with a tiered model. The flow of the water in birdbath fountains, as compared to unmoving water, signifies that bacteria and algae will not accumulate in the water, making for fresher water for wild birds. The final touch your garden area needs to be a haven of peace is the sound of water in motion.
