Relish the Unique Design of the Cascade Fountain at Chatsworth Garden

The Cascade garden fountain provides a spectacular main feature to the gardens and sits at the rear of Chatsworth House. twf012__01503.jpg Stretching down the hillside for 200 yards towards the house is a group of twenty-four irregularly spaced stone steps. The Cascade, also completely gravity fed, is primarily based on a 17th century French concept. This water fountain has been kept unmodified after being Created for the first Duke of Devonshire in 1696. The Cascade House stands at the very top of the fountain where water spills downward. Sea creatures in bas-relief decorate the external part of the residence which is a small building. Prior to proceeding down the Cascade, on important occasions water pressure to the Cascade can be increased, causing the Cascade House to become an element of the Cascade spectacle, as water passes through piping on its roof and from the mouths of its carved sea creatures. The shape of every single step was made slightly different and means that the music of the water falling fluctuates as it descends the Cascades, providing a wonderful and wonderful complement to a walk through the gardens. In 2004, Chatsworth's Cascade, was named England's best water feature.

An Absolute Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Archaeologists and restorers alike have stumbled upon a wealth of heathen and Christian artifacts on the site of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The nearby basilica is largely for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its entryway. The situation of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was not in a well-known area and was, therefore, not often visited. It was said that there was very little to see in this area, as it was abject and desolate making it an unfriendly place to visit. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to erect a fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an effort to make the area more popular. The work of laying down the church’s foundation started on August 17, 1717. Medals bearing the imagery of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown in the foundation following the consecration of the first stone.

Free Water Fountains in and Around Berkley, California

In February 2014, a tax on sugar-sweetened beverages was passed in Berkley, CA, making it the first city in the United States to create such a law. The taxation is supposed to lessen sugary drink consumption and augment the consumption of healthier beverages, including water from fountains. The aim of the research was to evaluate the state of community drinking water fountains and figure out if there is a distinction in access to fresh, operating drinking fountains based on racial or economic components. The research utilized a GPS app to compile data on existing water fountains in the city. The US Census Community Study database was chosen to compile information pertaining to race and economic status in these areas. The experts looked to use both data sets to figure out if demographics were associated to drinking water fountain access. Each water fountain and the demographics of its surrounding area were reviewed to reveal whether the site of the fountains or their level of maintenance revealed any correlation to income, race, or other factors. The fact that the fountains were working was not a guarantee that they were well-maintained, given that quite a few were in need of maintenance and repair.

The Results of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Gardens

The advent of the Normans in the latter half of the 11th century greatly modified The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Engineering and gardening were skills that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But there was no time for home life, domestic architecture, and decoration until the Normans had conquered the whole realm. Monasteries and castles served different functions, so while monasteries were enormous stone structures built in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on understanding offensive and defensive practices. The barren fortresses did not provide for the calm avocation of farming. The early Anglo-Norman style of architecture is represented in Berkeley Castle, which is most likely the most unscathed example we have. The keep is reported to have been conceived during the time of William the Conqueror. An enormous terrace encompasses the building, serving as an obstacle to attackers intending to dig under the castle walls. A scenic bowling green, covered in grass and enclosed by battlements cut out of an ancient yew hedge, forms one of the terraces.
