California's Garden Water Fountain Research and Results

b_169__69513.jpg Berkley, CA people voted for a sugar-sweetened beverages tax in February 2014, the earliest of its kind in the United States. By making soda more expensive, it’s expected that people will make healthier choices for what their children drink, like water for instance. Research was done to ensure that people of all races and economic classes had access to clean, working drinking fountains. The research utilized a GPS app to compile data on present water fountains in the city. The US Census Community Study database was chosen to accumulate information related to race and economic status in these areas. Evaluations were made amongst the location and demographic data, showing whether class differences affected access to clean, working water fountains. The study was able to identify the demographics of areas with water fountains, also noting whether the shape of the fountains was better or worse in lower class neighborhoods. The fact that the fountains were working was not a guarantee that they were well-maintained, since quite a few were in need of cleaning and repair.

Water Fountains: Cherished Pets, Flying Visitors and You

Anyone who has bird feeders knows that outdoor water fountains bring in wildlife. Birds need to have water to drink, bathe in, as well a place to groom, or preen. There are some birds, like robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers, which are not attracted to bird feeders, but are drawn to fountains because of the moving water. Birds are often drawn to outdoor fountains because of their moving water rather than the standing water found in bowl-shaped bird baths. Birds can hear the trickling and splashing and are even more likely to come visit.

Dogs are attracted to fountains because they offer refreshing water to drink. Dogs and cats will be outdoors looking out for clean water during hot weather. Because water in fountains is consistently moving, they do not need much cleaning, whereas the still water of birdbaths collect debris and require more care.

Sculpture As a Staple of Classic Art in Archaic Greece

The primitive Greeks manufactured the very first freestanding statuary, an amazing achievement as most sculptures up until then had been reliefs cut into walls and pillars. Kouros figures, sculptures of young, attractive male or female (kore) Greeks, made up the majority of the statues. The kouroi, considered by the Greeks to represent beauty, had one foot extended out of a rigid forward-facing pose and the male statues were always unclothed, with a compelling, sturdy shape. Life-sized versions of the kouroi appeared beginning in 650 BC. A substantial period of improvement for the Greeks, the Archaic period helped bring about more forms of government, expressions of art, and a higher appreciation of people and cultures outside of Greece. Notwithstanding, these battles did little to hamper the progression of the Greek civilization.

Outdoor Garden Fountains Recorded by History

Water fountains were initially practical in purpose, used to bring water from rivers or springs to cities and hamlets, supplying the residents with fresh water to drink, wash, and cook with. A source of water higher in elevation than the fountain was needed to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's nozzle, a system without equal until the late 19th century. The appeal and spectacle of fountains make them appropriate for historical memorials. When you enjoy a fountain today, that is certainly not what the 1st water fountains looked like. A natural stone basin, carved from rock, was the first fountain, used for containing water for drinking and spiritual purposes. Natural stone basins are thought to have been 1st used around the year 2000 BC. The first civilizations that utilized fountains relied on gravity to force water through spigots. Drinking water was supplied by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public monuments, as beautiful as they are functional. Animals, Gods, and spectral figures dominated the very early ornate Roman fountains, starting to appear in about 6 B.C.. The Romans had an elaborate system of aqueducts that delivered the water for the numerous fountains that were situated throughout the city.

Put in and Take Pleasure in Your Personal Pond Water Feature

Most people think of the spectacular masterpieces that decorate the front of public buildings when they think of fountains. But they actually come in a variety of styles and dimensions that are suitable for smaller spaces. You might even find a place in your own garden area for a beautiful pond fountain.

Owning one can improve your home in two main ways. To begin with, fountains add beauty and help everyone chill out. What better way to wind down than to listen to the trickle of water and enjoy its charm. Your spot will be even more elegant as well. Also, entertaining will be more fun, as your lovely fountain will encourage guests to socialize and take photos.

The other reason to add this type of water element is to keep the water in your pond heathier for your fish. Fish are much better off if their water is moving around and getting oxygen, and a pond fountain will do both of those things. Your fish will enjoy longer, healthier lives because of the flow of the water and the improved oxygen level. Your plant life will also thrive.
