The Pull of Tiered Water Elements

For many years now now, multi-tiered fountains have been common, particularly in gardens. These kinds of fountains are widespread in Italy, Spain, and other Mediterranean nations. While they can be located anywhere, they are most common in the center of building complexes and in popular areas where people gather.

Tiered fountains come in a wide range of designs, from elaborately carved styles to relatively plain types.

While they can be seen just about anywhere, they seem particularly at home in more classic settings. It should look as if the fountain has been part of the decoration since the beginning and should blend in accordingly.

The Tallest Fountains Around the World

The King Fahd Fountain (built in 1985) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has the tallest consistently-running fountain on the planet. The water here jets up to a height of 260 meters (853 feet) above the Red Sea.

The Han-Gang River in Seoul, Korea (2002), comes in second with water heights of 202 meters (663 feet).

Located near the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Missouri, is 3rd placed Gateway Geyser (1995). With water reaching 192 meters (630 feet) in the air, this fountain is the tallest in the United States.

Next is Port Fountain (2006) in Karachi, Pakistan, where the water shoots 190 meters (620 feet) high.

Number 4 is Water at Fountain Park (1970) situated in Fountain Hills, Arizona - it can attain up to 171 meters (561 feet) when all three pumps are running, even though it typically only hits up to 91 meters (300 feet).

The Dubai Fountain which made its debut in 2009 is located next to tallest building worldwide, the famous Burj Khalifa. Once every half hour, this fountain begins dancing to pre-recorded songs while shooting water 73 meters (240 feet) high. It also has extreme shooters, rarely used, which go as high as 150 meters (490 feet).

Number 7 is the Captain James Cook Memorial Jet in Canberra, completed in 1970, propelling water 147 meters (482 feet) high.

Last of all is the Jet d’Eau (1951) in Geneva, Switzerland, which measures 140 meters (460 feet).

A True Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Archaeologists and restorers alike have stumbled upon a wealth of pagan and Christian relics on the site of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. Found in the portico of the nearby basilica one can see the acclaimed marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth). Due to the fact that the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was situated off the beaten track, it remained mostly obscure. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a bleak and deserted part of the city. As part of a project to refurbish the piazza outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to design a fountain. The work of laying down the church’s foundation began on August 17, 1717. The consecration of the first rock to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being thrown in bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.

The One Cleaning Solution to NEVER Use On Your Landscape Fountains

In order to ensure that water fountains last a long time, it is vital to perform regular maintenance. A common issue with fountains is that they tend to accumulate dirt and debris, so it is vital that you keep it free from this. Additionally, anywhere light from the sun mixes with still water, algae can appear. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be blended into the water to prevent this problem. There are those who like to use bleach, but that is dangerous to any animals that might drink or bathe in the water - so should therefore be avoided.

An extensive cleaning every 3-4 months is best for garden fountains. Prior to cleaning, all the water must be removed. When it is empty, wash inside the reservoir with a mild cleanser. If there is delicate artwork, you might need to use a toothbrush for those hard-to-reach areas. Make sure all the soap is properly rinsed off.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and scrubbing the inside properly. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it easier to scrub. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain ingredients that will build up inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

Finally, be sure to have a quick look at your fountain daily and add water if you notice that the level is too low. If the water level falls below the pump’s intake level, it can harm the pump and cause it to burn out - something you do not want to happen!
